Challaborough and Bigbury from Burgh Island

Explore the area

From vast sandy beaches with shallow waters and rock pools to amazing coastal cliff walks with breath-taking views,

this Area of Natural Beauty has something for everyone.

Challaborough Bay Beach

A sheltered horseshoe cove with a lovely sandy beach, just a couple of minutes' walk from The Qube.

The beach is perfect for children of all ages, they will love building sand castles, playing in rock pools, paddleboarding or  swimming. It is also very popular with surfers and bodyboarders on the less calm days.

Dogs are welcome from October to end of April.

Bigbury Beach & Burgh Island

Voted one of Devon's best beaches, which all but disappears

at high tide. At low tide take a walk to Burgh Island to explore

the remains of the chapel known as Huer's Hut or to have a drink

at the Pilchard Inn. Access at high tide is via the famous 'sea tractor'.

Dogs are welcome from October to end of April. There is a section of the beach along the riverside which welcomes dogs all year round. All this just 10-minute walk away from The Qube.

Bantham Beach & River

Located at the mouth of the River Avon, Bantham Beach faces

Burgh Island and is renowned for its surfing. At the low tide, it is possible to cross through the river from Bigbury to Bantham Beach.

During low tide, you can take a riverside walk upstream to Cockleridge, where you can continue your walk inland towards Mount Folly farm or take the seasonal Avon Ferry to Bantham.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can paddleboard from Aveton Gifford and back using the tide to your advantage.

Around Burgh Island

While most of us experience beauty around us on foot, taking to water gives you a completely different perspective and the experience is just out of this world. Both, Challaborough and Bigbury offer paddleboards and other equipment for hire. Lessons and guided adventures are also on offer. So why not take a little trip around Burgh Island to make the most of your holiday.

Local walks

The Qube is spoilt for choice when it comes to local walks. Coastal to inland, gentle slopes to borderline

hiking routes, this location has it all.

The coastal path towards Ayrmer Cove and Wyscombe Beach will literally take your breath away.

Walking further towards river Erme which separates Wonwell Beach from Mothercombe is highly recommended

if you are feeling energetic. To top it off why not have

a well-deserved bite to eat in The Dolphin Inn in Kingston village on your way back.

Places to eat

One of our favourite places with lovely views of Bigbury on Sea is Pilchard Inn on Burgh Island. Waterfront Bar at the Challaborough beach or Venus Cafe on Bigbury Beach offer selection of meals and are nearly on your doorstep. Journey's End Inn in Ringmore or Pickwick Inn in St Anne's Chapel come highly recommended if you are after a heart-warming sit down meal. Booking in advance is a must to avoid disappointment.
